Are you a new parent struggling with feelings of sadness, hopelessness or overwhelm?

Lately you’ve been feeling exhausted all the time, no matter how much sleep you get.  You find yourself crying over the smallest things, and then feel guilty for not enjoying the time with your baby.  Everything feels harder than it should, and you’re just not feeling like yourself anymore.  You might find yourself questioning your connection with your baby, or feel like you’re failing as a mom

You’re so tired of feeling this way:

Like a burden, invisible, hopeless, numb.

It doesn’t have to be like this. Postpartum depression therapy can help.

Postpartum depression (also referred to as PPD) is a mood disorder that can affect new parents anytime during the first year after giving birth. While it’s completely normal for new moms to feel tired, emotional, or overwhelmed, postpartum depression goes beyond these typical adjustments to motherhood. It can start to interfere with your day-to-day functioning and make bonding with your baby feel much harder than you expected. It can also bring up painful, heavy feelings of shame, self-doubt, and harsh self-criticism about how you’re doing as a mother.

It’s common for new moms to experience the “baby blues”, or tearfulness, emotional ups and downs and exhaustion that occur in the first 2 weeks after giving birth (usually resulting from hormonal changes post-pregnancy and sleep deprivation).  But postpartum depression tends to be more intense and longer-lasting, and requires treatment. It can show up at any point during that first postpartum year.  Symptoms look different for everyone, but often include persistent sadness, losing interest in things you normally enjoy, low energy, and feelings of guilt or worthlessness.

Working with a postpartum depression therapist may be right for you if you experience things like:

  • Feeling deeply sad, empty or hopeless, even in moments that are “supposed” to feel happy

  • Feeling distant or disconnected from your new baby, and experiencing confusion or shame as a result

  • Feeling irritable, angry, snappy or even rageful

  • Pulling away from your partner, family or friends

  • Significant changes in your appetite or ability to sleep (even if your baby is sleeping)

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, like you’re failing or not the mother your baby deserves

  • Loss of interest in things that once brought you joy or fulfillment

  • Feeling anxious or panicky (postpartum anxiety and depression often occur together)

  • Having thoughts about harming yourself, or believing that your family would be better off without you (these kind of thoughts require immediate medical attention)

Postpartum depression is not a sign of weakness - it’s something that as many as 1 in 7 women (and 1 in 10 men) experience after having a baby.  You’re not alone.  At Root to Rise Therapy, we can help you overcome postpartum depression to feel like yourself again.
